Suggested Reading: Psalm 139:1-6

Dear NBRC Family & Friends,

It seems more and more difficult to keep much of anything about ourselves private these days. I make a telephone call and the person answering the phone might know my name before I share it. Online tracking can alert advertisers of my tastes and interests. Modern technology has made it possible for people we’ve never met to know more about us than we might realize or than we might want them to know. But regardless of how much others know about us, God knows even more.

In one of my Bibles, NRSV, Psalm 139 is titled The Inescapable God. David, the psalmist, was astounded and humbled by the fact that everything about him was known by God. God knew when David sat and rose, what he thought, and what he was going to say even before he said it. Nothing David did or thought escaped God. God not only knew David’s actions and words, He also knew David’s heart and mind.

God knows us as well as He knew David. Absolutely nothing about us escapes God. Realizing this might be troubling or unsettling since there might be things about us we prefer God not know. If that’s true for you, then is there something in your life that needs to change? If change has happened, then do you yet need to confess and ask God for forgiveness? Do you yet need to forgive yourself or someone else?

Realizing that nothing about us escapes God can also be comforting when we are confident that God cares about us and loves us. Rather than trying to invade our privacy or use what He knows about us to hurt us, God is interested in us. He wants what is best for us. Regardless of what He knows about us, He still loves us.

1. Is there something you wish God doesn’t know about you? If there is, what might that mean?

2. What about you are you glad God knows?

3. Are you troubled or comforted knowing that God knows everything about you?

Pastor Ron
