Mid-Week Musings

July 31, 2024

Suggested Reading: Psalm 19:1-3

Dear NBRC Family & Friends,

It’s already the last day of July! How quickly the summer is slipping away. What do you most enjoy about the summer months? The bright sunshine or warm temperatures? The singing of birds? The lush trees or brightly colored flowers? Butterflies flitting around? The rumbling of thunder or the flashing of lightning? The sound or smell of a gentle rain?

Something all these things have in common is that they reveal something about God. One of the ways God reveals Himself is in nature. David reminds us of that in the above suggested verses from Psalm 19, and so does Paul in Romans 1:20. The Belgic Confession echoes this in Article 1 when it teaches that one of the ways we know God is,

by his action of creating, sustaining, and directing the whole world, seeing it is before our eyes as a beautiful book, in which all creatures, great and small, are as so many letters that give us to see the invisible things of God, namely, his eternal power and deity, as the Apostle Paul says, Romans 1:20.

Among other things, nature reveals at least something about God’s power, creativity, providence, sovereignty, and faithfulness. While nature falls short of revealing everything about God, nature does testify to the existence of God.

Maybe you’re already thinking of some of the words of the hymn titled How Great Thou Art.

When thro՛ the woods and forest glades I wander
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees,
When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur,
And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze;
Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee; How great Thou art!
How great Thou art! Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee;
How great Thou art! How great Thou art!

Prayer suggestion: As you pray, ask God to help you see what He reveals about Himself in nature.

Pastor Ron
