Dear NBRC Family & Friends,

What will you do on Labor Day this year? For some, Labor Day is just an ordinary day. For others, it’s a day off from school or work. Some will walk the Mackinac Bridge or attend a parade. Some people spend part of the day taking docks and boats out of the water. There will be family gatherings, barbeques, and picnics. Some won’t get the day off and will spend at least part of the Labor Day holiday working.

With so many things happening on the Labor Day holiday, it’s easy to forget the meaning of the day. Recognized on the first Monday in September, Labor Day is a day set aside to remember and recognize American workers and their social, economic, and other contributions to the well- being of the country. The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated in New York City on a Tuesday in early September in 1882. In 1894, it was designated a national holiday to be recognized on the first Monday in September of each year through a law signed by President Grover Cleveland.

In addition to whatever else you do this year on Labor Day, try taking some time to remember and recognize American workers. In particular, try remembering, and even thanking if you can, workers who are often overlooked or taken for granted. For example:

Mail carriers
Janitorial staff and housecleaners
Customer service representatives
Trash collectors
CNAs
Parenting
Child care workers
Cashiers
Farmers
Construction workers
And the list could go on!

One way that can make a worker feel unappreciated and taken for granted is to not thank them for the work they do. In addition to simply remembering them, maybe this Labor Day you’ll even say “thank you” to a worker for doing the job they do. And if you do it often enough on Labor Day, you might even get into the routine to doing it throughout the year!

Prayer suggestion: As you pray, ask God to help you recognize and thank workers for the workthey do.

Pastor Ron

(Next Sunday morning, September 1, the Scripture lesson will be from Mark 7:1-8. The sermon title is Lips and Hearts.)
