Suggested Reading: Mark 9:30-37

Dear NBRC Family & Friends,

When I was in school, I was often hesitant to ask a question during class. What if my question had already been answered by the teacher? What would other students think of me, especially if they knew the answer that I didn’t? Would others laugh at me or “make fun” of me? Would I be made to feel stupid? Instead of asking my question, I would often act as if I was understanding while also hoping to find the answer on my own or in some other way.

In the above suggested Scripture reading, Jesus’ disciples “did not understand what he was saying and were afraid to ask him” (NRSV). As you prepare for the sermon to be delivered Sunday morning, September 22, read Mark 9:30-37 and consider the following thoughts and questions.

1. Why do you think Jesus didn’t want anyone to know where He and His disciples were?

2. What do you think the disciples would like to have asked Jesus but were afraid to ask Him?

3. Why do you think the disciples were afraid to ask Jesus?

4. What are some reasons people today might be hesitant to ask a question?

5. Do you have a question you’re hesitant to ask Jesus?

6. In verse 31, why do you think Jesus says “Son of Man,” “him,” and “he” when referring to Himself?

Prayer suggestion: As you pray, ask God to help you ask good questions!

Hope to be with you Sunday in person or online!
