Mid-Week Musings

August 14, 2024

Suggested Reading: 1 Kings 2:1-3

Dear NBRC Family & Friends,

David knew his time on earth was drawing to a close. As great a king as he was, David’s time to die was getting close. His time of reigning as king over Israel would soon be over. Soon his son, Solomon, would succeed him as Israel’s king.

A dying David took advantage of the time he had remaining to give Solomon some advice. David urged Solomon not only to maintain strength and courage, but to also keep the law of Moses and to live life according to God’s commands. In so doing, not only would Solomon enjoy success, but God would also fulfill the promise He made to David that his throne would be established forever (2 Samuel 7:12-16).

Bit by bit, second by second, my time on earth is also drawing to a close. Each breath I take brings me closer to the final breath I’ll ever take. Unless Jesus returns first, someday I will physically die. And so will you.

Given that reality, the example of David invites us to not only consider how we’re living our lives, but to also consider the importance of instructing others on how to live while we yet have time to do so. The best way to live is to walk in God’s ways, to live according to His commands, and to be in a right relationship with Him through saving faith in Jesus, the Messiah from the line of David.

David seized the moment. He took advantage of a God-given opportunity to have a serious talk with Solomon. If God gives me an opportunity to have a serious conversation with someone about the best way to live, will I seize the moment while I still have time? David didn’t know how much time he had left. Neither do I. Neither do you. With the lives we live and with the words we speak, let’s show and tell others about the best way to live.

Prayer suggestion: As you pray, ask God to help you show and tell others about Him.

Pastor Ron
